well they dont actually rust, alloy oxidizes which means it corrodes with air, it has a white bubbly texture. an easy way to prevent this is to keep it clean and to either keep it oily (only a light smear with a rag) or keep it polished with a product like autosol, obviously oil will attract dirt. for a permanent solution you can use a clear lacquer which will stop the oxidization process, you have to prep the cranks properly to make the lacquer stick perfectly! using an anodising romover from 'sealey' then polishing them with auto sol, i had to buff them with a dremmel and cordless, also using varied courses of emery helps shift the majority.

some people say to use oven cleaner instead of anodizing remover, but the problem is oven cleaner is really harsh to the aluminium! You want to use the proper stuff as it doesnt harm or fatigue the properties of the material!
